The Coolangatta Sands Hotel built 1911 is two story timber-built Queenslander pub with accommodation upstairs, this is the only original Coolangatta pub left standing, The Sands Hotel formally Kirriabelle Hotel featuring new bar and bistro, modern accommodation upstairs with renovated terrace for an afternoon drink. The Coolangatta Sands Hotel, affectionately known as “the Sands”, is in the heart of Coolangatta and only a short walk to Kirra Beach or Coolangatta Beach. This historic pub has had a few minor to major makeovers in the past 100 years, as you do. The upstairs accommodation is basic and offers good sized room serviced with TV room and well fitted communal kitchen great for travellers or the modern backpackers. The Hotel front bar used to have a horseshoe bar and the back Kirrabelle Kitchen was a group of smaller nocks and smaller rooms in the 70s the pub has moved forward and still maintains it Queensland stance in the main Street of Coolangatta.
Coolangatta/Tweed Heads in or about 1828 was home to convict station large European settlement a polit station, customs house and a single hotel and the rail line from Brisbane to Tweed Heads railway opened in 1903 and Coolangatta was never the same Kirra and Greenmount Beaches boomed, by 1914 16,000 people a day arrived, Coolangatta Surf Club 1911. The Kirrabelle publican in 1960 was Ron McAuliffe know as the grandfather of State of Origin football and played football for Seagulls, — menu 23-4-2023
