The Criterion Hotel is a beast of a hotel in its time this hotel would have been one of the best in the country, originally owned by David Bugden his family from 1860s till 1880, Demolished in 1917 and rebuilt in the same year
Warwick is becoming a rich farm area the rail line proposed a hotel that will meet the discerning traveller’s needs, in the central wing across the courtyard guest/hotel laundry, the kitchen and the former Dining Room. The layout is a big U shape this wing is approached from the Stair Hall along a timber veranda which continues around the wing. The upper level of this verandas also has a ripple iron with internal gutters. The main stair arrives at the First Floor in the upper Stair Hall which has moulded archways less ornate than that of the lower level.
From the mid-landing is a smaller stair of similar detail, which leads to the upper-level verandas. From the Stair Hall run two corridors through the accommodation wings, a lounge leading to the western verandas, and the former Lobby and Ballroom. The bedrooms in the accommodation wings typically have low-waisted four panel doors with tilting fanlights. The rooms and corridors have press metal and a variety of plaster and timber archways. Exit doors commonly have coloured glass upper panels and flush lower panels. The hotel retains a substantial amount of its internal joinery including the main staircase, although some has been relocated within the hotel.
The trades man that built this hotel and workmanship and skill would be near impossible to replicate the timber work the brickwork in symmetry in this hotel and many other building in town. There is also an extensive range of including the unusual "Virgin Mary" motif in the Public Bar where you will find 3 bullets holes covered over now called Three Bullet Bar stands our magnificent silky oak bar.
