Mullumbimby was originally a centre for the timber industry. Notably, red cedar was collected in great quantities along with Aussi Teak, Hoop Pine, Rosewood, Silky Oak with Back/Red Bean some only found in northern New South Wales, the name "Mullumbimby", meaning "small round hill", was given to the district by Aboriginal people Mullumbimby was a separate municipality from 1908 until 1980. This was a timber town full of hard-working farmers, Timber cutters, cane cutters and a thriving town.
Mullum is a mix of multi-cultural blend people local first Greek venture into the Mullum in mid-1906, opened restaurants, café, oyster saloons on Burringbar and Dalley Streets. Apart from C. S. Brazill’s bakery, which provided ‘Ladies Tea Rooms with high-class Quadrille music’ and presumably an 'all hours' service, there appears to be no other establishment offering meals outside the set times of the pubs and boarding houses. Police figures show the Mullum district population at 2325 by 1905, with 185 dairies and 2100 acres under crops. The Mullum district surpassed Byron the following year.
